Business Retention & Workforce Development Committee
  
The Business Retention & Workforce Development committee met on March 15th at 8:30 am. This meeting was primarily used to discuss the results of the first Breakfast Networking event held on February 27th and continue the planning process for the next Breakfast on April 24, 2018, focusing on Business Structure, beginning at 7:30 AM at the Community Center located at 15500 Perdido Key Dr., Pensacola, FL 32507. 
 
The upcoming breakfast networking event, Early-Risers, will showcase one keynote speaker to discuss the ins and outs of how to structure your business. Glenn McDuffy, a business consultant from the Small Business Development Center at UWF, will attend the event to share information to all business owners or aspiring business owners about how they can get the most out of their business. He will also be happy to answer questions about what business entities will be best for your business and any and all on-going compliance requirements that all small businesses should be aware of! Based on interest from the attending audience, the Business Retention & Workforce Development Committee will consider adding an additional workshop for the topic of Business Structure for those who would like to go into more detail on a specific subject. The more in-depth workshop would be held in May 2018, either as a morning “Breakfast Brief” or a “Lunch & Learn” located at the Chamber office.

Meetings are open to all members, their employees, and prospective new chamber members. Breakfast will be served, so please mark your calendars now! Plan to attend to enjoy some networking, meet new potential customers, learn invaluable information to help your business grow and hear about what your chamber is doing for you!

 Military Committee 
   
The Military Committee met on Tuesday, March 27, 2018, at 4:30 PM. The committee is currently working with MWR at NAS Pensacola to organize a special appreciation day for the military personnel in our community. 
 
On national Armed Forces Appreciation Day, May 19, 2018; The Perdido Key Chamber will sponsor a FREE event to all active duty members and their families, as well as, retired military members and their families. Attendance is expected to reach 2,500 to 3,000. The event will be located on the base and will include events from 3 pm to 8 pm. Events throughout the day include; a Cardboard Boat Regatta, Kid Zones, Games and Crafts, Water Recreation, Hula & Limbo Competitions, and special entertainment by Hawaiian Dancers to close the night. This event will require participation and sponsorship in the form of volunteer, in-kind and monetary donations. This event will need a large amount of input from our community, if you are interested in helping in any way,  please reach out to the chair, Erin Wilmer at erin.wilmer@edwardjones.com
 
The committee is in need of a sponsorship from your business in order to put on this important event for our hometown heroes! This is a great opportunity to get your business name out to your community of Perdido and Pensacola locals. Our military personnel makes up a large part of our community and use our local businesses every day. Use this as an opportunity to give back to the military! contact Erin today or call the Chamber to get involved!

Advocacy Committee 
 
The Advocacy Committee met on Wednesday, March 28, 2018, at 8:30 am. The committee this month was accompanied by guest speaker, Sara Lefevers, Assistant to Congressman Matt Gates. Lefevers encouraged using Gates’ office as a resource and letting them know what issues the community deals with. Lefevers also reminded the committee that they can ask for letters of support for grants. The committee voiced their opinions and concerns in the areas of Prescription drug and alcohol abuse, Pedestrian Traffic-Safety, Oil drilling in Florida, and underground utilities. 
  • Visit Pensacola Update: Tall Ships will be coming April 12-15
  • Friends of Big Lagoon Update: Working on new roofs in the park, the boat ramp is closed as they are making it larger. Currently working on an Earth Day clean-up event
  • Perdido Key Association Update: Partnering with the Earth Day Project. Suggested Beach Vitex removal as a possible project for that day. Also planning World Oceans Day for June 8th. 
  • Emergency Management Update: Dana Pagador attended a training that reviewed how we work together in the event of an emergency. Shannon with Brace will be attending the Business After Hours on April 18. 
  • Real Estate Update: Property Values are up 8%. New construction is very expensive. parking is an issue, inventory is low, they are in need of sellers. 
  • Friends of the Library- meeting on April 9th, they will discuss summer reading programs in the park every Tuesday all summer long.
  • Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo-the new zoo is breaking ground, it will be 100 acres and completed in 15 months. they will be working with Auburn University who is also building their new vet school near the new zoo.
  • Perdido Key Chamber Update: Upcoming events are the Federal Reserve Luncheon on April 5 at Perdido Beach Resort, Business After Hours on April 18, Early-Risers Breakfast on April 24, and Military Appreciation Month events including the Red, White & Birdies Spring Classic, and the Star Spangled Salute Appreciation Festival. 
  • The Lion Fish Removal Festival will be in Perdido Key this year May 19 & 20 at the Flora-Bama

The committee is currently looking for a volunteer who may be active in the Gulf Shores Area in order to relay information and develop relationships with the Perdido Key Advocates.
