Committee Updates: November 2017

Business Retention & Workforce Development Committee
 
 
The Business Retention & Workforce Development committee met on November 16th at 8:30 am. The committee confirmed the breakfast meeting dates and locations. The Perdido Key Chamber’s first breakfast meeting of 2018 will be held Tuesday, February 27, 2018, beginning at 7:30 am at the Community Center located at 15500 Perdido Key Dr., Pensacola, FL 32507. 
 
The committee is currently confirming a panel of local professionals to discuss and answer questions on a range of topics relating to HR, employee and workforce development. Subjects to include but not limited to; effective recruitment, interviewing, setting wages & benefits, updates on labor laws, training investing retaining and incentive’s  for employees and empowering employees to achieve exceptional customer service. 
 
Based on interest on any of these subjects, the Business Retention & Workforce Development committee will follow-up the February Breakfast meeting with a more in-depth workshop which will be held in March 2018, either as a morning “Breakfast Brief” or a “Lunch & Learn” located at the Chamber office. Meetings are open to all members, their employees, and prospective new chamber members. Breakfast will be served, so please mark your calendars now! Plan to attend to enjoy some networking, meet new potential customers, learn invaluable information to help your business grow and hear about what your chamber is doing for you!

The next meeting will be Thursday, December 21, 2017, at 8:30 am at the Chamber office. The committee will be discussing the next steps in breakfast meetings and choose speakers for in-depth training. If you have ideas that you would like to share, or would like to take part in the decision making, feel free to join! 
 
The Business Retention & Workforce Development Committee meets the 3rd Thursday of each month at 8:30 am at the Perdido Chamber: 15500 Perdido Key Dr. Pensacola, FL 32507.  
 

 
 Military Committee 
   
The Military Committee met on November 28, 2017, at 5 pm. The main discussion was centered around the upcoming event, Wreaths Across America on December 16, 2017. The committee plans on both attending the event to support the military community and their families and also find volunteers to help lay wreaths. 
 
The Wreaths Across America Ceremony will occur on December 16, 2017, at Barrancas National Cemetery, located on NAS Pensacola. The deadline to order a sponsored wreath has passed, so now the task is to organize and volunteers for the date of the ceremony. The Chamber is still accepting any volunteers. If you would like to join us, please email emily@perdidochamber.com to be placed on our contact list. If you plan on attending, please come to the cemetery around 8 or 8:30 am in order to be instructed by Base Authorities of where to park for the event.

The committee will not meet in December. The next Military council meeting will be on January 30, 2018, at 4:30 pm. Please attend to discuss plans for the military appreciation month occurring in May!

Advocacy Committee 
 
The Advocacy Committee met on November 29, 2017, at 8:30 a.m. The committee members shared information about the different community meetings they had attended to keep the committee up to date on what is happening in different aspects of the community. 
 
The committee has identified where they would like to focus their efforts. These include Leave No Trace, Safety on the Key, the Trail/bike path, sea turtles and aligning with outside organizations. Some of their goals include inviting influential speakers to their meetings and creating a set agenda for 2018. 
 
The Chamber is planning a Snowbird Roost in Pensacola at Skopelos New World, the Chamber plans to have 6-10 vendors. Tickets may be purchased in person at the Perdido Key Visitor’s Center, located at 15500 Perdido Key Drive, Pensacola, FL 32507. 
 
There will also be a  Chamber Snowbird event held at the Flora-Bama on March 1, sponsored by Perdido Realty. This will be a very relaxed atmosphere featuring plenty of food and a scavenger hunt! More information about this event is to follow. 
 
The Perdido Key Association is currently in their election cycle and will have one to three possible openings. The hot topic for the board meeting was the land available next to Holiday Harbour and their desire to make it a parking lot. The PKA will be having their Christmas Party on December 11, 2017. 
 
The Friends of Big Lagoon reported the news of Holiday in the park on December 2, 2017, form 5 to 7 pm. Admission will be waved to the park and Santa will be present! 
 
Santa Claus will be at the Flora-Bama on December 9, 2017. After the influx of attendance for their Thanksgiving celebration, the Flora-Bama plans to have around 1000 people attend the event! 
 
The EOC meeting reviewed the emergency plan for both Santa Rosa and Escambia Counties. There were discussions about evacuation zones and misunderstandings and issues with the website that will be evaluated. 
 
Members of the advocacy committee will continue to attend other organization meetings and discuss what is occurring in the community and what the Chamber can do to get their members involved in the Perdido area. If you would like to share information on your local organization, feel free to join the advocacy committee during their next meeting! 
 
This committee will not meet in December. The next meeting will be January 31, 2018, at 8:30 am. Please attend if you would like to get involved or have any ideas on what we can be working towards in the Perdido Area. If you have any questions, contact committee chair: Kim Parker
