Thinking about Retiring to Perdido Key? We asked a few recent retirees what brought them here and what they are enjoying about retirement in Perdido. James Rumpler had a story that many can relate to:
“My job brought me here – I was a Civil Service employee and the pickings weren’t that good after the Wall came down and the US military started leaving Germany – but I/we got lucky. We love it here and when we retired we decided there was no place we’d rather be. There is an acronym used by the military “PCS” that is “Change of Station” meaning the movers come and pack your stuff and a couple of days later you’re living and working somewhere else. We PCS’ed 9 times working for the US military – the Army and DOD. My dad was military too so in addition to all my moves as an adult, we moved a lot when I was a kid. All this goes to say we could have relocated anywhere but chose to stay here for the quality of life.
Well of course we knew about the beaches before we moved here but we didn’t realize all the leisure time activities available – cultural, athletic, academic, shopping, etc.- as well as the somewhat recent resurgence of downtown Pensacola, plus the easy access to other attractive locations – Destin and Seaside, south Florida, Apalachicola, the casinos, New Orleans, Atlanta by plane is an hour away, etc.
If you live here, you’ll never have to shovel snow off your driveway.”
